Steering wheel nut

What is the size of the nut that holds the steering wheel on? I need to remove the steering wheel and need to buy a socket big enough-my spanner seems to slip /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif, and I don't want to damage anything-like my face!

Any advice?
 
i used a 1-1/16 socket on mine with a LARGE wrench.....
loosen the bolt part of the way...then tap from behind
while pulling with ur knees....THEN take the bolt off..
youll be fine ; ) ....zzimmmy 74 midget

So now I've finally gotten the nut and two screws off and after serious amounts of "whacking" with a hammer, it won't budge. I even tried a gear puller and after it got sufficiently tight, I heard a pop and thought I had success. Now the whole column moves a small amount, and the wheel is as tight as ever.

What am I missing? Am I doing more harm than good?
 
what year is ur car?..if its newer than my 74 it could be different....if so id better let someone else help you...hope u didnt break nothing...pops sometimes arent good...examine everthing very closely to see whats going on...zzimmmy
 
The stock wheel on my 71 Midget is 1 1/16"
 
I got the nut off with a huge torque wrench and a 1 1/16" socket and 70 lbs of force! I just about broke my teeth cringing! There were two small screws above the larger nut that I removed and now the wheel will not pull off. Am I just facing more stubborn splines?
 
u dont have to take those screws out....spray the bolt with pb blaster and let it set overnight...while u go buy a rubber hammer ; )
 
It should 'just' come off. Spray it with pb blaster (or similar) and let it sit overnight.

Make sure you leave the big nut ON at least two or three thread while you are pulling the wheel off. It is likely to come off all at once and without the nut you will loose teeth!
