TR2/3/3A Steering Wheel hold down Nut

The original nut was "staked "(hit with a chisel and hammer to lock the nut in place) at the factory as that is one nut you definetly do not want to come lose. I have installed a new nut as I recently removed the steering wheel to center it better. Is it advisable to stake the nut or use Locktite(red or blue?) since it is available now but wasn't back in the day. There never was a stated torque value for this nut was there?

Just guessing, but that nut likely doesn’t have to be too tight. I think I just snugged it down and I don't recall using any locktite, but my choice would be blue so you can get if off again is need be. Cheers, Mike

I had the wheel off a year ago and had tightened the nut quite bit. When I removed it yesterday it took very little to break it free which concerned me! Still wondering if it should be staked. I agree with you about the blue locktite.

I am a big fan of a special nut that is called a stover nut. It is similar to a nu-lock but I feel it is a little more secure and they can also be used in a heat application as with exhaust. They should be available at a good bolt supplier. These nuts are a single use nut, they can be reused but the locking ability is reduced. Frank

I use a quality star washer on my steering wheels, their very thin, grip 360 degrees, and usually don't mar the surface. Just a suggestion. PJ

I would favor the LocTite - orange perhaps.

Orange Loctite

Permatex High Strength Removable ORANGE is a hybrid formula that combines the strength of a Permatex Threadlocker RED with the removability of a Permatex Threadlocker BLUE. ... With 3X the strength of Threadlocker BLUE, Permatex Threadlocker ORANGE ensures that pieces will not loosen or back out over time.

I like Stover nuts (e.g. for mounting the rear shocks) but have no seen one that large - also they might be too thick for that application.
