Steering Wheel and Hub Removal

Feel free to BFH it-I have rebuilt columns on the shelf to sell you when you destroy your old one.

The only wheel I'd beat on is the cursed late model thing that a proper steering wheel puller will not work on. There is no good way to safely remove that thing. I hope every one that gets removed gets trashed afterward. I made a copy of the Moss puller for this wheel found out the c-clamps destroy the vinyl on the back of the wheel if you are not carefull, so beware

Glad you finally weighed in on this one, Gerry....I tried to state what I thought was your position earlier (same as mine) but was hoping you'd come along!

Now, Julian, before you go any farther, order a set of Gerry's steering column bushings!

ummmmm, guys....I think he got it ;-)

Chuckle: yes!

As I reported yesterday, I was able to pull it off bare handed, no tools needed.

Now I am wiring up the horn push for the Grant wheel and hub.

bare handed??? with biceps like that you didnt need a smaller wheel, just a pair of vice grips clamped on the shaft would have worked.

Makes it a tiller! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

They don't call me Charles Atlas for nothing! Actually, they don't call me Charles Atlas at all ... I put it down to the PB Blaster: I squirted a bit in the day before, and when I took the hub off the splines were wet with it. With that lubrication, I'm not surprised it pulled off.

The best money I've spent is on that can of PB Blaster: a tip I got from this forum. It's Magic.

Julian, nows a bad time to ask, but did you mark the face of the shaft first,at centered wheel position, before you took off the old wheel?

Anti-seize the shaft/wheel interface, put the wheel on semi-snugly, drive it in a straight line and note wheel orientation... then adjust accordingly.

I'll give you the shippin' addy for the keyboard replacement. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

No, I didn't make a note, I'm afraid: I was so surprised it came off, I wasn't expecting it.

What's wrong with attaching it, turning it so that the wheels point straight forward, and then lifting it off and replacing it square on? Is that not accurate enough?

because if you "point" the wheels straight forward without the car moving, you won't know for sure if it's REALLY straight forward. Just cause it ~looks~ like the wheels are pointing forward doesn't mean it is. It could be off by a couple of degrees which would have you turning...
