Steering Wheel Again

To all of you who helped me in geeting the steering wheel off my 1979 MGB thanks very much. Your help was great.

Now, I have changed the turn signal and I want to put the wheel back on. I have two questions:

1. Where do you get anti-seizing compound? I never want to have to go through the effort of getting it back off again and I understand that if you use this compound it will be easy the next time. Where do you get it and what is it called?

2. How do you align the wheel for installation? Do you center the actual road wheels and then place the steering wheel on so that it is straight, or is there a more scientific way of doing it?

It's called anti-seize and is available at auto parts stores.
The procedure for putting the steering wheel back on is how you described. Before removing a steering wheel I usually mark the wheel and splines with a line of paint to help in lining it back up when reinstalling.
 
However, if you didn't mark the splines...you've got to center the steering & slide the wheel on the shaft...don't tighten the nut completely & (here goes) gingerly drive down the road, let go of the steering wheel & let the car check whether or not you centered the steering....in other words, does the steering wheel stay 'centered' when you take your hands off it - or does it turn a bit left or right? If you have to, remove the wheel (after coming to a complete stop) & replace it 1 'tooth' left or right & retest.....oh, a local parking lot is good for the driving test.
 
hmm, i like it! sounds like suicide to me! drive down the road with the steering wheel unbolted...is there an easier way (for those who have people who will miss them, which i am not conncerned about)
 
Don't just remove the nut and toss it!!!

Put it on to finger loose for the drive, determine straight ahead for the CAR and STOP! Then take off the nut and pull the wheel to "correct" its position to "straight ahead"...

Now here's the important bit: PUT TH' NUT BACK ON! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

It really isn't too big a trial.
 
I use Bostik Never Seize, don't know if it is available in the States!
 
Permatex Anti-Seize comes in a "lifetime supply" can here inna lower 48, as well as smaller tubes. Available at most auto supply houses.

Shucks it won't come off even without the nut. And you are not going touring. Ten miles an hour does the trick.

Oh forgot to say, for fun take someone along and pull the wheel off and hand it to them. Weeeeeee. I did that to wife one time. Long ago and far away.

heh... I always wanted to get one of those quick disconnect racing steering wheels... just for the "cool" factor... I noticed not too long ago that they've started selling them for "regular" cars now... I find them less appealing now than when they weren't as readily available...
 
I ~did~ have an old girlfriend make a grab for the wheel of the Elan once... She got a *SEVERE* counciling immediately, at the side of the road. THEN I took her on a ~DEMO~ ride around "the home course": a twisty-windy two lane in Western PA, at speed... roller-coasters couldn't match it... she didn't pee in my car but she looked a bit "peekid" after, and NEVER objected to my driving again. She MUCH preferred the Alfa GTV for trips after that, too. I met SWMBO shortly after that... SHE *GIGGLED* on those kinda runs.

T'was. Herself became "one of th' guys" soon after. One of the "Western Pennsylvania Lotus Mafia" was an "Honorary Member." He had a full-blown 1275 Mini. a real Cooper S. We strapped SWMBO inna passenger side of that and he took her on a run and wrung it out well... she got out grinnin' like the Cheshire Cat and declared: "I ~WANT~ one!!". She settled for a '67 MGB, and with all the "support" from the Gang learned it inside-out. I just HAD to conclude she was a "keeper".

In 1962, shortly after I got my first bugeye and started autocrosing it the wife wanted to try. She did, ladies class. hehe. Then the club decided she had to race with the men as she took all the trophies. Could always beat 90% of the guys. Have kept her for 47 years.
She now has an Olds Intrigue she picked out. Has a big V6 and goes like the hammers.

Before we were married, were comming down from the first day ever of Daytona race track being open for visitors, races the next week, she was driveing, I was sleeping.
Car was a 54 ford sunliner, lincoln export engine. lowered 2 inch, stretched 4 inchs, skirts, lakes pipes, louvered hood, olds tail lights, noised decked, etc, etc. I woke up cause the top was getting noisy and saw she was running over 90. My kind of gal. Car had been clocked at 140 the day before.
