/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gifHi to all. I'm looking for a company/person that can restore the steering wheel in Agatha. Any suggestions?

Hi Judow, You might try Dennis Quality Restorations in Poway Calif. However, there are several good repair kits on the market for the DIY crowd with excellent instructions.---Keoke???
You might try Mike Lempart. He makes replicas including one off custom jobs. This is the same Mike that makes high ratio rear end gear sets. No financial interest just passing on a trustworthy vendor who "gets it"
Judy,
Agahta would really like a wood rimmed wheel from M. Lempert or Cape Healey..and all those rings her human wears wouldn't chip it up so quickly..;>)

Wasn't the 100M wheel wood anyhow? Bruce

Hi Bruce,
I believe that the wood wheels were a factory option, if not, they were an acceptable period accessory. IMO this would be more desirable than repairing the "standard" wheel. Just make sure that the spokes are equally spaced at 120 degrees as original. Some replacement wood wheels are not.

Its worth noting that Donald healey didn't like the original steering wheels, he assumed that buyers would change them for more sporty ones. The reason they were on the cars is that they were cheap, 13s 6d each I believe, which in those days was about $2.50.
After much agonising with originality I finally changed mine for a Moto Lita version which I'm very pleased with. This has the additional advantage of making my steering column NON-adjustable. My steering used to adjust itself when I was driving!!.
As Dave says make sure you get the 120 degree spokes (same pattern as the original wheel) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
Have to second the work done by Koch's. Recently had them do the replacement wheel in my BN4 after my oringinal broke badly. Very pleased with the result. He started his business by restoring vintage VW steering wheels and now performs complete VW restos. Still specializes in steering wheels however.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am going to consider all the suggestions. I do think I am leaning to retaining my original wheel type for restoration. I like the look of it with the black interior.
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif Oh yes, David a/k/a Mr. Snippy - It was NOT my rings that caused the problem - the wheel wasn't in good condition to begin with and the paint merely came off at all the chips. Dah, give me a break! Now everyone on the forum will think I'm some 'high maintenance female.' LOL
