Will the steering rack from a 77/80 MGB bolt up to a 71 MGB cross member. Will the shaft from the 77B align with the 71 universal joint. I need the rack but dont want to change over the whole front susp.

If you are looking to install a 77/80 rack/pinion in a 71, then I believe the answer is no. Refering to the Moss cat, the change was in 74 1/2, and the shaft to the universal became longer. I might be mistaken...what says Tony or others ?

Cheers Ric

It became a "crush tube" type with the 74-1/2 IIRC, I don't believe they're interchangeable easily. Not ever tried so don't think this the 'last word' tho.

NO! Use a 74 back. As Doc says, the shafts are a different length. Also the cross member mounts stand out more on one or the other. Forgot which. I dont know if you can use a late model for parts to rebuild an earlier model though. I haven't tried that one yet. PJ

Doc's correct....& to muddy the water, in '74 or '74-1/2 they made a steering box that had fewer turns than any other box...its the one I'm looking for for my V8 car...count your turns & if oyu have one 2.9 or under, contact me!
