i have pulled my B steering rack apart to clean etc and was wondering what lube is recomend and how much? whats the best place to fill it from? cheers

I use 90wt gear oil in mine.

I use cornhead grease.

Cornhead grease?

Hehe, John Deere makes it for farm stuff. Pumps like grease lubes like heavy oil.

Comes in a standard grease cartage so you can add a bit from time to time like you are supose to.

Google it.

I may have to stop by the local John Deere place and check it out. I never liked grease for the steering rack. On the "A" they want oil in the steering rack, and grease in the trunnions, and on a Spitfire I had, it was oil in the trunnions and grease in the rack? Go figure..........

Replaced my boots this weekend and used 90wt oil as that appeared to be what the residue was in the old boots....

After years of working on my tired old steering rack, chaseing leaks & replacing boots. I finally decided to pull it. I got it off & started to take it apart but life got in the way and it sat on my work bench for about a month. So I just gave up & ordered a new one from VB. Dispite some quality concerns my new rack seemed just fine. In fact it was so good I never realized what I'd been missing all this time.

That was couple of years ago now and it still feels like it's brand new. But even at a little over $150 I wouldn't recommend it unless your old unit is totally toasted or if you're like I was - just short on time.

Good luck.

The B racks use 90wt. and you fill them from the top. There are no grease zerks to fill to my knowledge.
