Steering rack Question

I am redoing the rubber bits on the front of my 75 spit.
i have pulled the steering rack out and have a few questions
1. how much grease is supposed to be under the rubber rack boots? mine has globs and globs.
2. what is the purpose of the little nylon plug in the rack tube under the passenger side mount bushing
3. anyone know the specs on the mounting u-bolts for the steering rack. VB is selling them for $26 each!!!!! just want to make sure they are not made of un-obtainium or something.

thanks.
Bill

1 not that much. Just a couple of pumps from a grease gun
2 the plug is held in place by the mount and rubs on top of rack. It is needed.
3 replace with muffler clamp u bolt of correct size. that is what I did.
only problem is that you lose the eye hooks for tie downs

Actually, the "eye hooks" are on the sway bar mount clamps, not those for the steering rack. And I'm not sure I want to trust a $1.39 low-grade mild steel clamp in either application, seeing as I've snapped more than a few brand-new muffler clamps in my time! OTOH, perhaps that's what the major vendors supply nowadays? I don't know....

(BTW, Canley Classics in the UK appears to sell the sway bar clamps with the "eyes" -- at least if the diagram on their web site is accurate. These usually weren't used in the home market cars, as I recall.)

You're right about the sway bar mount.I used stainless clamp bolts to replace the eye bolts.

I've got several sets of the steering rack mount clamps painted and ready to go, $30/pair+shipping.

i may take you up on that. however, my mounts are solid...i just need the u-bolts that pass through the mounts to the frame plates.

thanks for the info.
not sure i trust the muffler clamp... they have coarse thread and the one i took off has fine thread.
what Eye Hook are you talking about?
mine has a "recovery" slotted plate welded to the frame for trailering tie down. my steering rack hold down just had the bushing, the u-bolt, the bushing "cover" that the u-bolt passes through, and a slotted plate. am i missing something?

i understand i need the nylon "plug" but what is it there for?

these are the parts of my rack.
anyone know how many turns lock to lock on a stock 75 spit? mine is about 3.5
thanks
