Hey all,
Finally have my 58 BN6 finished enough to get it on the road
for some test drives. Got the engine roughness figured out
but the steering effort seems to be a little stiff or jerky
when I turn more to left than right. Everything has been
rebuilt or replaced so not sure where to start to look.
Looked at the BMC manual and looks like two courses of action -
add or replace shims or use the adjustment screw. Got to
put in a new stator tube so might as well check the shims
first but any ideas ? Just doesn't feel smooth when you
turn the wheel, almost like something is just barely binding ?

Hi Mike,

If you jack up the front wheels off the floor and then turn the steering wheel back and forth, you will notice a slight hesitation or very slight bind when passing through the center position of a properly adjusted steering box.
If there is any play , ( steering wheel movement without any wheel movement), then the adjustment screw needs to be slightly tightened . If it is really binding hard then the screw is too
tight.
If there is only a bind when moving in one direction then something else is probably wrong.
I should disqualify my remarks by saying I have a BJ8 not a BN6 and I don't know if they are different or not.
.. More knowledgeable folks than I will certainly comment .

HI, If setting the box up as specified in the shop manual does not cure the problem, you may have aworn Peg Follower and/or Inner shaft---Fwiw--Keoke
 
Thanks Ed and Keoke ( good to hear from you Keoke !!!!) for your advice.
I adjusted the screw and that seems to have taken care of it as the entire
gearbox was rebuilt by the previous owner. When I jacked it up it was
stiff at top dead center but once loosened just a bit, turns smoothly now.
Getting ready to do a road test so if not corrected I will let y'all know.

Just got back from my test drive and it was the adjustment screw - finally
something easy !!!!!!!!!!
 
FYI, very important to place the 2 inch metal blocks under the front shocks to simulate correct height when making adjustments. It's in the manual.
