Steering column

Does anyone know how to disassemble the steering column of a '74 B?

I've recently refurbished my steering rack, and I want to tackle the column next. It feels a little "gritty" when I turn the shaft, and I want to disassemble it to the point I can examine the bearings (or bushings or whatever).

I got the controls off, but I can't tell how to remove the shaft from the tube.

what ever you do i know you dont want to rip it off. it does not matter how frustrated you get. you just wont see how its set up when all the pieces are on the carpet. as soon as i figure out how to resize pictures i can send some to tony and he can tell me what he will charge me for my over eagerness.

Will:

Yes, I've learned that lesson already. I have some sort of genetic predisposition for taking things apart. That tends to bite me when it comes time to put things back together again.

Installing my new seat covers would be quite a mess if I didn't have a second set of seats, "unmolested", to use as an example of how everything goes together.

Well, I figured it out last night. I got the turn signal "canceler" off the shaft and removed the clip that secures the top bearing in the "twist lock" piece, at the top of the tube.

After that, it was like somebody cut open a shotgun shell, and dumped it on my floor. Both bearings had eaten themselves (hence the aforementioned "grittyness").

I got the upper bearing off the shaft, and the outer race of the lower bearing out of the tube, but I can't figure out how to replace the lower bearing. It looks like they installed it before assembling the two halves of the collapsible shaft.

Has anyone got any ideas about how to replace these bearings, or should I start searching eBay for a new steering column?

I can supply pictures of the carnage, if that will help.

Gerry Mastermann down in Louisiana rebuilds them & also supplies a set of neophrene bushings he makes in his shop.

Is Gerry still making those?

Last I saw of his website, he had closed down his business.

Think he'll do it on a case-by case...he told me the other day to send him a column & he'd rebuild it for me....contact him, you never know...

Thanks Tony. I got in touch with him through the MG Experience site.

Super - can he help you?

He said he had a few bushing kits left.

He asked for my mailing address, and said he'd send me some parts.
