Steering column question

So I was driving on Falls Road in Baltimore and decided to do a rally style right turn at 40mph...when all of a sudden I felt the steering column shaft sorta pop out of its place. When I finished the turn I was able to push the steering column back in. Is this normal? or is something way loose in my steering column/rack?

that's not normal unless you are the Hulk. the clamp that holds the column at the steering rack bind the column as the bolt fits in a groove on the column. Check to see if you have that bolt at the steering rack. - and drive very carefully
 
Find the prob before you drive over 10 MPH.
 
Check the bracket under the dash and also the three bolts that hold the column to the firewall. That's certainly not normal.
 
It has to be the missing bolt where the stearing shaft is connected to the rack. That is the only thing that would allow the shaft to move toward the driver.

Do not drive till you fix it.

I will definitely check it out when i get home tonight. What size bolt would it need to be?
 
It's a special hardened bolt. 5/16, but must have a shoulder. Yours may have come out, or just have worn enough. Happened to me once. Scary! I got redundant and also pinned it.

By shoulder Peter means that it only has threads on the end. It is unthreaded where it goes through the fitting. So it is like a solid peice of steel pin for most of its length. Do use a lock nut.
