Steering Column Installation

I’m installing the steering column on my BE. It appears the openings of the column tube are different diameters. I’m a little uncertain regarding which end of the ‘column cover’ goes toward the steering rack and which goes toward the steering wheel? I’m thinking the larger end goes to the steering rack and the smaller toward the steering wheel?
Is this orientation correct or is it small end to rack and larger to steering wheel?

I also see the orientation of the rubber boot over the steering rack coupler in parts books at first I thought this also went in the firewall to support the tube. I’m thinking the firewall must have a grommet instead?

Thanks for assistance.

The Moss catalog show the dust extruder over the coupler but it actually fits in the hole in the firewall for the steering column.
I don’t remember where the big diameter end goes, I’ll open the bonnet tonight and look.

Thanks! It may be difficult to tell by sight as the diameter difference is slight. But there must be a reason for it?
The felt bushings that go on top and bottom of column tube are different size not sure how that relates as well.

Thanks

Mine is installed but it looks like big end at the steering wheel and tapers down to the rack. You’ll know if the clamp under the dash is loose.

I have one sitting against the wall. May be MKII but the clamp is still on it. The steering wheel end has a small rolled indent about 3 inch from the end. I cannot see a taper on it or the one in the car.
If yours does not have the rolled indent look for marks where the mounting clamp was installed about 8 inches from the end.
As mentioned before the rubber boot goes into the firewall. Nothing over the attachment to the rack.

Thanks, its hard to see difference in inside diameter from outside, it is very slight.
i do have the grooves on both ends of the tube. I thought there was a rubber boot on the connector to the steering rack?
otherwise the tube just fits over the connector clamp?
The lower felt bushing must then fit above the connector clamp in the tube?
it looks like if there is no rubber boot on the clamp the tube must rest against the plastic bushing surrounding the clamp?
