Steering column cowl question

My 79 steering cowl has 2 "knock-outs" on either side below the indicator levers one of which has a cover and one of which doesn't. I just picked-up a used one in better shape that has a small push button switch mounted in the knock-out under the wiper lever which looks original but I haven't looked at too closely. Any ideas what this may be, and any ideas what the original use of the knock-out under the indicator lever was intended for?

Thanks,
Bud

I'm not sure. I once saw the answer to this on another board but I can't remember for sure. I believe they were there for switches used on the home market cars, one was to turn off the instrument lights and leave the side and parking lamps lit for parking at night on the street. B's had a similar toggle switch on some models. I thought the opposite cutout was for a hazard switch if the car didn't come with the console. Like I said, going from an old an mostly faltering memory, may not be close.

I recall the same details as bill from the same sources. But I also remember a switch to engage overdrive if the car was so ecquiped

Sprites and Midgets (even the 1500 models) never had an overdrive.
