Steering Column Coupling

A few weeks ago I replaced the upper and lower steering column bushings with Art Lipp's Delrin bushings. That was a piece of cake to do as you leave the stock ones in place and tap the new ones in on top of them. The one thing he had warned me about was that the rubber coupling between the upper and lower column would probably be broken or torn. And it was....And.....installing a new rubber coupling can be a bear to do as the rubber has to be compressed to get the holes to line up. Fellow TBI powered TR6 owner Aaron Cropley suggested using a big old hose clamp.....which worked great. It compressed the coupling evenly and let me easily screw it in or out to get the holes lined up.

I used a C clamp. I'm glad it worked out. Not familiar with the over lay bushings. Sounds like something Dale will do next.

Don,
I started with the C-Clamp but I found that it wanted to walk as I tightened it and then it compressed the rubber on an angle making it tough to line up the holes. I was running out of patience having had a bad Triumph day! If it had been a good day I probably would have stuck it out with the C-Clamp.
