Steering Box Internals

Did all 6 cylinder AH models have the same steering box internals? I have the top off mine and inside it does not look like the diagram on K3 of the workshop manual. My manual is for the 100-Six and 3000 but does not include the BJ7s and BJ8s, did these later models have different steering box internals?

In the diagram in my manual the follower peg is 'peened' over the rocker and is visible from the top, this is specifically mentioned in Note 3 of the dismantling section. The top of my follower arm is broader at the peg end and has two small circles opposite each other, It does not have a peened peg. It actually looks very similar to the one shown in the Denis Welch catalogue.

YES:

As I recall one of the principal differences in the boxes was the later boxes contained a peg which was free to rotate and was supported inside a needle bearing housing.
Both the peg and the bearings were replaceable.

Thanks Keoke, you are correct. I just checked in the AH Spares catalogue, they describe the later box as the 'raised lid' type, which appears to be what is fitted to my car. Half of the lid is higher than the rest and as a result you have two long bolts and two shorter ones to hold it in position. The peg is described as a Needle Roller Peg.

We could do a swap, ( lol)

My BJ7 has the early type of steering box as it was originally an American car and was swung over in Britain to RH drive at some point. It would appear that there may have been an availability problem years ago and the 100/6 box was probably the only type available and then as a used part. The ratio is slightly different between the two as well.
