The ferrule used to seal the end plate has a split on the side to allow the ferrule to compress. Was this done by the factory , or was this done by previous owner to make a standard ferrule work?

Factory.
I still use Teflon tape to add to the sealing capacity of the100+ year old technology!

My recollection is that the split was original. The ferrule goes on only in one direction ... I have a closeup picture of mine but now I don't recall if it is right or wrong way around as someone pointed out my error while I was doing this job. Happy to post pic if it will help. Cheers, Mike

My replacement ferrule,I think from TRF ,maybe from Macys with the stator tube, was not split.I have never seen a split ferrule. The sealing is by compression around the tube.
My guesss would be it was split to remove the stator tube. I have worked on lots of various type tube fittings but only worked on this one TR3 box so I could be wrong.

I do think the originals were in fact split ... but can't find a definite answer online. Gerry sent you a couple of links by PM. Cheers, Mike
