steering box and distributor question on 100-4 BN1

Hey all,
Couple of quick questions -

1. When I refill the steering box on my BN1, do I fill it
until the 90 weight oil starts to come back out, as in
the differential filling method ?

2. On the distributor - there is a small copper tube that
attaches to the advance mechanism ( I believe ) of the
distributor. This one routes behind the head and then
just terminates no where so to speak. Not hooked up to
anything at the other end. Attached to the advance mechanism
but not to anything else at the opposite end. Should this
be attached to something ???

Thanks for everyone's help i advance and Happy Thanksgiving !

Mike

Hi Mike,
100s are out of my comfort zone, but since you said Happy Thanksgiving...
2) Sounds like the vacuum advance tube. Check for a blocked-off fitting near the rear carb. This is a photo of the tube for a BJ8, might be a similar location. The real question would be why it was blocked in the first place. My guess is sumthin' be wrong there.

Mike,

1) On the box there is a plug on the back lower left when looking back at the box I think. It's about 3/4 the way up the box and should allow you to fill but not over fill.... Now if we can just get that gland to stop leaking....

2) On the line from the vacuum line it should go to a connection on the bottom of the rear carb. Forward side I think. You will notice the fitting or a threaded hole where there is to be one....

Happy Thanks Giving!

Michael.

2) The bottom of the rear carb just outboard of the throttle plate and about 8 o'clock. Here's a picture if it works

Re: steering box and distributor question on 100-4

Thanks y'all for the info ! I knew the brass tube had to connect somewhere
and reading the repair manual did not help much. Something about "the carb
communicating with the distributor"? The Healey is running fine now so be
interested in seeing how it runs when I hook everything back up.
Regards,
Mike

Re: steering box and distributor question on 100-4

Mine has the vac advance plugged at both the carb and at the end of the vac advance unit, ie no copper tube, seems some relied on only the mechanical counter weights for the advance

Re: steering box and distributor question on 100-4

They also make a special lube for the steering box, Penrite, that is god at stopping or at least miimizing the leaks these boxes tend to have, I think Moss sells it, definitely worth it in my opinion.

The vacuum advance hook up is a fun one to get to.
