Not sure RE:spridget racks, but MGB racks used to have a larger-than-grease nipple on the pinion coverplate, specifically for an "oil gun"... they took 'em OFF after a while due to people stuffing GREASE in 'em inadvertently (or ignorantly). Grease "stiffens" the feel of the rack, and even more so in cooler climes. My cars' steering racks get ~assembled~ with a THIN film of grease, and filled with the "Factory Recommended" quantity of oil. Only time I've ever had to replace or rebuild a rack is if the owner ignored ruptured boots and continued to drive the car... and even then it took a looong time to "kill" the rack.
