Steering boot ist kaput

Will be oil in mine, heavy oil. and a quarter cup from dry. I think two pumps of oil is supose to be added like every six thousands miles or some such, check the book.
 
BTW, I found that Moss & VB don't carry the input shaft seal for the steering box. My local bearing shop got several in stock this week if anyone needs them I will send the phone number offline. It was the last part needed to finish up my rebuild. Now to the big question: pro & con regarding grease vs oil in the box. It's a '69 Midget and was filled with grease when I took it apart. The car will mostly be driven in warm to hot weather....
 
Fooooot on the greese, oil is what is supose to be in there.
 
Please check the orginal service manual, I think you will find it says heavy oil.
 
Not sure RE:spridget racks, but MGB racks used to have a larger-than-grease nipple on the pinion coverplate, specifically for an "oil gun"... they took 'em OFF after a while due to people stuffing GREASE in 'em inadvertently (or ignorantly). Grease "stiffens" the feel of the rack, and even more so in cooler climes. My cars' steering racks get ~assembled~ with a THIN film of grease, and filled with the "Factory Recommended" quantity of oil. Only time I've ever had to replace or rebuild a rack is if the owner ignored ruptured boots and continued to drive the car... and even then it took a looong time to "kill" the rack.
 
Yeaaa, Doc. Thanks, OIL in the rack, about a 1/4 cup from empty and yep, an Oil Gun and they are still available.

BTW: There ARE some grease compounds NOT soluble in oil. Just try it out on the bench with a "slurry" if there's a question.

My denial has caught up with me too Fred. I too have a tear in a boot and no history on when that was greased last.

I just ordered a set myself :^)
 
My set is due in at the end of the week. I've noticed the slight leak under the driver's side boot since I bought the car last spring. Guess I should have done something earlier. Oh well.
 
i don't know, sometimes i question even the manufacturer for things like this. mixing grease and oil is never a good practice, but as mentioned, failure of these joints due to anything other than dirt is rare so i will follow suit.
 
Surely, the oil will slowly turn the grease into oily stuff. No prob.
 
You guys make this too complicated. Mark one flat on nut and rod with a crayon lining up both. One turn too short, gap will show on line, turn too much it will cover up end of mark. No measuring and almost foolproof. Now who has crayons in their toolbox?
 
Even easier: just count the turns as you remove the rodend. There is only 1 starting thread and no way to misindex.
