Stealth alternator?

Hi all,

I recently noticed that Powermaster is now making a "stealth" alternator for old Fords.

It looks almost exactly like the original generator, but is actually an alternator putting out up to 75 amps (60 at idle!). Only problem is it's damned expensive... around $350. Ouch!

Still, it's a great idea! I wonder if they (or someone else) ever considered something like that for the LBC market?

Hey! I've got an old Lucas TR generator out in the garage if they want to experiment with it!

Cheers!

I saw a site for a firm that did many brands... but still just American Iron. Too bad, I think there would be a market for these for TR (like there would be a market for hub pullers).

Considering there really aren't more than a few different styles of Lucas generator, it probably wouldn't be that difficult to do something like this.

On the other hand, my original (11 61 date code) generator on my '62 Herald is working fine. Yeah, I finally had to have it rebuilt last year, but.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Andy,

Yeah, my old Lucas generator still works too. But, the bearings are jury rigged and the 22 amps (at best) is now mostly used up by the electric cooling fan on the radiator! I just got a set of Lucas SLR700 "Flamethrowers" for the car that would probably look like a couple fireflies without some extra amperage.

One argument in favor of an alternator conversion, I am fairly certain there were a few TR4s produced for police depts in Belgium that were fitted with alternators right from the factory, for the extra power requirements. I am fairly certain many of the rally cars had them installed, too. I've heard that Delco were used in some cases (that's what I've got in my car), probably along with some Bosch.

If anyone discovers a company making "stealth" Lucas alternators, let us know. I would imagine they would be popular with LBC owners who want to keep to an original look.

Cheers!

Alan
