Stator Tube

The olives sold by supplier(s) are split; anyone know why?
Normally when used an olive on a compression fitting it’s for a permanent joint and the olive compresses onto the tube and can’t be removed without cutting it off .
Having a split olive allows the fitting to be dismantled and reused .
Also if you were to cut an olive in a normal compression fitting for hydraulics or water etc it would not seal due to the pressure .
Used in this application pressure is not an issue .
 
Thanks, that 'splains it. When I've removed them, there is usually a ridge on the olive where it seated, meaning I could re/use them exactly twice (they do need to seal oil in the box). Maybe I'm over-tightening, but it's all that keeps the trafficator from rotating in the hub.

I would guess so they can be removed from the tube. If the outside diameter of the tube under the olive gets smaller due to the compression, an olive without the split might not want to move. Just a guess.
 
Never had an issue with unsplit olives. Always been able to slide the ferrule off. The brass is softer than the steel but I still tighten carefully. Just rember to remove the pit. 😄
