TR2/3/3A Stator Tube 56 TR3

I am putting my steering assembly back together. Can someone tell me how the stator tube is properly positioned. I see only one photo in the manual and it suggests that the tube extends about 1 inch at the bottom and is then presumably flush at the steering wheel end. Is that correct or should some protrude at the steering wheel end? Thanks, Mike

Don't know if it helps, here is how mine was on the parts car. Not sure if it is different with the one piece column vs the 2 piece like yours.

Thanks Tush ... makes some sense that there is a part exposed, but on Figure 13 on page 18 of the manual (Front Suspension and Steering) it shows removal of the steering column and there is a substantial amount to stator tube showing out the bottom. The tube is not long enough to have that much overhang on both ends. With the tube flush at the steering wheel end about 1 1/16 inch is exposed at the other end right now. Would like to get it about right before reinstalling.

Need to get this back together so that I can steer the car onto the trailer for its "fall drive" for final paint ... hopefully within the next week or so.

It needs to make a good deep connection on the head where it slides into the head. If it sticks out too far at the top then the little grub screws will not grab the collar ring and hold it and the whole thing will be too high. You will be able to move it up and down and if it runs long on the bottom a little it will not matter. I suppose a good way would be let it stick out at the top and keep the bottom lose, then just push everything down, and it should self-adjust, then tighten the bottom nut. There are not difficult to wiggle up and down and you will find the point you need without much trouble. Just let stuff float around some until your happy. When you do the last setting on the grub screws keep the wheel straight and tighten around the wheel. The last time I did it, I move the wheel to make it easy on me, but it pulled the lower piece that shuts the mechanical part up. On the final setting that piece needs to point down.

Steve and Tush both sound about right. I'd say make sure the tube is sticking out of the steering box just a little, install the horn assembly and let it push the tube down a bit further, that way both ends are where they should be.
