Last Christmas, I proudly announced on this forum that I had successfully unwrapped and opened a music CD (in its original packaging) using no tools of any kind. Accolades were heaped upon me.

I am now announcing that on this Christmas day I will attempt to open two music CDs without tools, ordinance, or extreme invective. * /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

If I succeed, I plan to end war, illness, world hunger, and Japanese domination of the US car market.

* This assumes that I actually receive two music CDs, or that someone else will let me open theirs.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif For this retrograde step you want applause?

Surely the proper response is to solicit a new TOOL for Christmas, one ideally suited to such work....

Frankly, I laud the accomplishment!!! I've ALWAYS resorted to the Swiss Army solution after bare-handed attempts and MANY invectives.

Congratulations, John. Your stock has risen dramatically after the "gift-wrapping" debacle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Nope. But they never seemed to make any difference in my attempts in any case. Mebbe it was due to my overbite. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif completely! But I may want to listen to one of Jimmy Buffett's CD's, so there's gotta be a "discretionary compromise" here someplace! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

We've gone to digital mp3's here... but I would smack any ipod with those artist on it in a second... hehehehehe.

From David: How about that new Paris/Britney Christmas CD?

[/ QUOTE ]

I have never heard either of them sing but I suspect this particular CD doesn't meet the definition of ~Music~ CD that I had in mind.

Thank you all for the encouragement. I will, of course, post the results of my endeavor.

Boy, the excitement never ends around here!

LOL....I beleive the tool of choice here would be a 3 pound sledge for the Britney/Paris Xmas CD.

You could play it in the garage to keep the mice out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

What if one of the CD's is David Hasselhoff, Live in Germany - I sure wouldn't be openning that with my teeth.

Would it leave a bad taste? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Dragging from the archives, the perfect tool for opening a CD, as a matter of fact designed for it... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Where to get one? I'm not quite sure, I got mine at a music festival about 10 or 15 years ago... And it works so well I hope I never lose it as I've never seen one since then...

my friends have one of those things! The first time I saw it, I held it in my hands analyzing its design attempting to comprehend what it was for. At first, I thought "paper cutter" (e.g. like the ones that people like to cut wrapping paper with), but after the initial inspection I scratched that thought out. Then I saw the groove that was the perfect size to slide over a CD case, but without a CD case on hand the size of the gap didn't register in me noggin. Then I noticed the tiny little sharp tip off center in the groove, and ~really~ started to wonder.

During this whole time I think my friends glanced over at me puzzling over this item maybe 4 times, and never said a thing. I guess they were too busy with their stuff for it to register in their minds what I was doing with that thing. Finally, after maybe 5 to 10 minutes of studying this apparatus I gave up and ~had~ to ask what the heck it was for. I gave them a really puzzled look and asked, "what the heck is this thing supposed to cut with an off center blade that sticks out 1mm in that groove?" The response I got back was, "OMG, you mean to tell me you've been sitting there this whole time trying to figure out what that's for? It's for opening CDs."

Once I heard the purpose, the design of the tool made total sense to me, but up 'til then I'd never seen one so I didn't recognize what it was.

Of course, I was taught a new method for opening CD cases that still have the edge sealed on them. I've BEEN opening them by pealing the tape off the edge. This past week, a lady friend watched me sitting there with one of her CDs scratching at the tape with short nails, and apparently she got impatient (I guess she really wanted to hear the CD /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif ) snatched the CD from my hands and pried one side of the hinge off and flopped the top over so that the 'sealing tape' acted like a hinge. From there removing the tape was as easy as pulling the two pieces apart. When I saw that method and how easy it was to get inside the packaging I felt foolish for doing it the hard way all these years... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I checked google for CD case openers and, sure enough, they can been bought for under $2. I plan to do so.

Meanwhile, just as pilots and sailors may welcome the presence of a GPS in the cockpit but should never become dependent on it, I feel I must hone the necessary skill to do this task the hard way.

I don't know how many people I've done that in front of.....
Always the same reaction. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

yeah... and it makes the need for a CD case opener... uhm... unnecessary.
