STARVING FOR GAS!

Car has bene "almost done" for months now. Ugh! Car will ru if you force air thorugh the gas tank to push gas down the line. Put a new pump on...mechanical....still starves. emptied the tank for bad gas and put 3 gallons back in after washing the tank for rust...still same problem. we think whatever is inside the tank is clogged that connects tot he line. Any ideas? Next step is buy a new gas tank on this 1979 MG Midget. Her name will be "MONEY THIEF" as she is taking all of mine!

Might remove the tank, pull the sending unit, so you can see down in there with a non flammable light. Suggest you take it to a radiator shop that repairs gas tanks. A lot of the older, established shops do. They can clean it, pressurize it and reseal it for you, probably at a far less expensive cost than a new tank.

Re: STARVING FOR GAS! $^&$^$@@@

Have you tried pumping gas with your fuel pump into a can?
What I'm asking is if you are sure that you are looking at the right end of the car?
An obstruction up front would also cause those symptoms.
Maybe you had problems at both ends and you have taken care of the gas tank end now.

Re: STARVING FOR GAS! $^&$^$@@@

ah good points...*sigh*..

Re: STARVING FOR GAS! $^&$^$@@@

Have you done any thing with the charcoal canisters? The breather line for the fuel bowl runs to the charcoal canisters. If (or rather WHEN) the canisters get clogged, it will prevent your fuel bowl from functioning properly. If you have all that stuff connected, disconnect that line and see how she does. If you have that line plugged or capped, unplug it.

Also, did you set the float level when rebuilding your carb? That may be worth checking out if the easier fix above does not take care of you.

Finally, in fuel starvation scenarios, it's always worth looking for vacuum leaks. I had one where the carb mounts to the manifold that had few symptoms until I got up to 50 mph at which point the car would just choke.

Check the screen inside the tank for blockage. If you disconnect the line at the tank, with fuel in the tank, there should be a steady flow from the outlet.

Re: STARVING FOR GAS! $^&$^$@@@

Rick brings up good points. I would run a makeshift hose from the pump into a small can to see if she works. Don't want to pull that tank and find it still didnt work.

Re: STARVING FOR GAS! $^&$^$@@@

check your fuel lines for damage, kinks, tight bends etc
as sugested split your system to isolate your prob
get a new length of fuel line
1.feed fuel pump from seperate tank or tin tell you which direction your prob is
if prob goes away you know its back towards tank
2. remove original line from tank blow from fuel pump inlet back clean any rubbish out
even connect test hose to tank prob still there you know its in the tank
as above remove sender and visually check
when you remve lines dont forget to lug so you dont lose your fuel on the floor

at step 1.if the prob doest go check your flow rate at the pump diconnect out let run into container and wind over engine
see how much is coming out seen new fuel pumps fail if sems ok( not sure of specs sorry if it looks not much probably is)
see morris's post

ps dont forget fuel filter
hope this helps

Re: STARVING FOR GAS! $^&$^$@@@

Ok guys, think problem is solved. got a new tank and float..no fixed. I told the restorer the other day "Hit the carb with come carb cleaner fluid!" as I just went through this with a darn lawn mower the week before. He tells me no. TOday the tank went on and nothing. Same problem. The old mechanic Mike (77) opens the carb, drops a bit of gas in and now its runnning like silk. Thank you all!

Re: STARVING FOR GAS! $^&$^$@@@

Age is sometimes a wonderful think, we use to use a coke bottle with gas in it.

Re: STARVING FOR GAS! $^&$^$@@@

Glad it's fixed. A tip: Don't ever spray carb cleaner into your carb, it will attack the rubber diaphragm attached to the air piston and ruin it. Result = car won't run until you buy a new diaphragm.

Re: STARVING FOR GAS! $^&$^$@@@

A plastic spray bottle with a little gas in it works real well!!

Re: STARVING FOR GAS! $^&$^$@@@

When I use starter fluid I spray it on the air filer so only fumes get sucked in the engine. It may not be orthodox but it works.

I assume from Dave's comment that the '79 had a Stromberg carb instead of an SU?
