Well thanks to every body for help with the starter it works fine now.. BUT..

when the car starts or even when the engine tunrs over, The oil filter leaks very badly. It is the original style (not spin on adaptor) We had no oil catch pan today, somebody borrowed it. The oil filter was tight, so I am assuming there is a gasket at the top of the filter. The previuos owner had chnaged the oil, and it it clear and golden (what a waste to see so much on the floor). Can I buy gaskets for this, or should I spend the money on a spin on adaptor. If I do I have seen some ads say you need to buy the oil cooler as well, Is this true?

Sorry, I'm no help on this one. My 1970 had a spin on filter when I bought it (it says "purolator" on top of it) and I have no oil cooler.

I've been fighting this very issue with my 948 with the original canister filter. I blew out 2 filters with drastic oil loss issues. There is a NAPA filter that does come with the correct gasket (NAPA gold 1184). There is a little groove that the gasket is supposed to fit into. The NAPA one comes with 2 gaskets, and the smaller of the 2 is supposed to work.

That said, I just reinstalled mine after removing the entire housing so I could get it assembled properly. It leaked badly when I got it all back together, so I'm going to order up the spin-on adaptor next week. The original system seems quite fussy, and I think the $100 for the spin-on adaptor is probably worth it.

Anybody that has had a spinon has had your problem.
an old gasket stuck in the grove, or any debree that you can't see will cause this result. I seem to remember once I didn't get mine spun into the threads right and when I thought it was tight, it wasn't. It is in a place that although it is accessable, you really can't see much. Anyway, a spinon is the answer, and while you are thinking about it, think about an oil cooler, it is all good.

Speaking of which... Does anyone know what the difference between the Moss spin-on adapter and the Vicky Brit spin-on adapter is (other than $50)?

Well looking at the catalogue, Vivy bit (49) requires an oil cooler to be bought for an extra hand full of cash (>$150), but the Moss one ($98) does not require an oil cooler. Little British Car Co. carries the same adaptor for $84.

With the spin on filter what Fram filter number do you use ?

Hmmm... I'm not sure what the difference between the two could be that would require an oil cooler with one and not the other. For that matter, I can't imagine why a spin-on adapter *would* necessitate the need for an oil cooler.

Here is a pic of the moss (top) adaptor and the vicy bit adaptor (bottom) I guess the moss changes the pipe from filter housing to block, while the vicy does not, but how it works I cannot tel from the image.

If any of you need a spin on adapter, we don't use them with the race cars, so I have a few lying around that I have no use for.

Hap, you have a PM. I surely would like one of those.

Same for me, Hap, PM on the way...

I installed the Vicy Brit part last night (9-1067) uses a FRAM 933 or equivelant filter. Took 10 minutes. I bought it local paid $80 Canadian but no shipping and no waiting it was in stock. The oil leak seems to have stopped. Much happier now. Now I just gotta drain out all the bad gas. Any idea on the best way to do that?, Just disconnect the fuel line at the fuel filter and run the hose into a container and turn the key on and let the fuel pump do its thing?? I guess I have about 2 gallons of gas to pump out. The guage reads empty.

That's what I've done in the past.
