bought this starter from Moss about 3 to 5 years ago. It seamed to work quit will till about a year ago. It found a dead spot and had to use 7/16 N wrench to move it about a 1/2 turn. Then it would start.
Then it got a little smarter and I had to roll the car and then let out the clutch. This would free it and then I could start the car. Then it got a little smarter as rolling and letting out the clutch just locked up the back wheels. Now I was suck. After a bit a chap came by and happen to have a garden hose in his truck. A couple of wraps and we had a tow rope and tow to home. Then I got a little smarter and put it on the lift, removed the oil filter and was able to get the wrench on it. It did free and it did turn the engine over. Then I got really smart and removed the starter and bought the new gear drive form moss. Will install that when it arrives.

As chewed up as the gear is, I would recommend that you check the condition of the ring gear on the flywheel.

yes i did and it is ok. the problem is the starter gear is much softer than OEM it is a real POS aftermarket starter made in India . If anyone is running one better switch it out. The new torque ones drive the front side of the ring gear. The old style drives the other side. So if that side is a little worn , you will not have to replace the ring gear.

How I removed the Bendix when I rebuilt my starter.

Hi
Yes I have done this a few times. I just have had enough of this brute force type of starter. I am installing the new version but just having a bit of a fit problem. Old style oil filter now int the way. Just ordered the 1200 type oil bracket and filter assy. The other fit problem was starter collar had to be cut to make room at the engine block area. I think it wil now all work IMG_2837.jpg

Yes, this is why I prefer using original parts, even if the condition is so-so, rather than new ones. Repaired or restored original parts are usually better than what you can buy today. Maybe some exceptions, but I don't want to experiment with the new stuff just to find the occasionally decent new part.

I now have the new High Torque starter motor installed
Had to work around three problem. First the old oil filter had to go as it was in theway of the new starter, The 2nd was to install a filter body from the 1200 engine. The new filter body return pipe fitting was a little different. the oil pipe from filter top had to be cut and a section removed and replaced with 5/16 fuel hose and 2 worm clamps.
this made it easy to screw in the fittings.
The other problem was the fitting on the new filter holder it is not the same size as the old one. It is a bit larger. The old one would screw in but it did not match. The fitting that I ordered is on BO and will be some time before it arrives. The work around was to use Right Stuff gasket maker. I applied it to the threads and fitted the first half of the fitting. Let dry then fitted the oil line with its fitting to that. Started it and no leaks.
Here are some pictures IMG_2852.jpg This is the original one and is now for sale Fits the 968 sprite IMG_2851.jpg The starter motor is also for sale. just put a new bendick on it PM if interested
