Starter Rebuid

Bob, I hate to tell you this but I don't think they are available. I rebuilt my starter about 2 months ago and searched emmensly and never found them. I was to all the regular suspects here and across the pond. I went to starter and motor rebuild shops locally and found none. Even spent about an hour or more in the back room of one particular old shop going thru drawers that had starter parts from way more than 50 years ago. None matched the brush tension springs on our starters. I ended up taking an assortment from many places that were close, then ultimately I recurved the center tab to catch the pin it rotated on. The spring I used was alittle larger than the originals and its diameter caused the long thru bolts to rub on it alittle but it didn't affect its operation. The started bench tested very well when finished. It hasn't been used in the car yet. Dave.

I'm just talking from memory now, but I am sure I looked at the generator springs. If I remember right the center tab is 90 degrees different on the two units and it was easier to reshape the part that rides on the brush than to force the 90 into a tighter circle.

Hi the repair shops rebuild these starters all the time they have suppliers for these parts perhaps one might sell you a set OF SPRINGS.--Fwiw--kEOKE

I took mine to a local rebuild shop last winter expecting the guy to laugh at me. He took only 24 hours to rebuild it. No problem. He does old starters and generators all the time. Call around your area and you might be surprised.

It's not a hard rebuild as long as you don't break a spring. Must be the shops in Pa are a little inferior to the ones in the rest of the country because there wasn't a shop within 50 miles of my area including a LBC resto shop that had a spring.
