TR2/3/3A Starter rear plate 54 TR-2

The power stud at the back of the starter rear plate was stripped. I dis-assembled the starter and removed it from the plate, re-taped the stud and am attempting to put it back together. There is a plastic insert that goes in the plate hole around the stud. Is it on the outside of the plate, or inside? I bought some new insulated washers as the old ones were disintegrating.

I looked around for picture but could not find one; it probably does not matter as long as the lug does not touch the case. I have seen it both ways. I would choose the way it would stay in place and function best.

Believe it or not, I had taken a pic of the back plate before I removed it. It shows well that it is on the outside. Duh! Sorry to have wasted your time.

If I ever figure out how to download pic's from Picasa on this site, I could explain so much better "Pic is worth 1000words".

I am starting to put the starter back together. Is there a secret way of installing the brushes back on to the armature? I tried disengaging the springs first, slipping the plate with brushes back on the armature. Now some of the springs have come off their support and i am trying to re-mount them so there is tension on top of the brush. I finally got one back on, three to go. There has got to be a better way of doing this?

Dick

Yes---you remove the end of the spring from the holder leaving the brush in the holder then take a small hook tool and pull the end of the spring back over to the holder. There are good pictures in the original repair manual. Randall has posted the book many times; it might be available on line somehow if you do not have one

Hello Dick

What do you use to take your photos?
If it is your phone you can e mail them to yourself then save them to a folder on your computer. From there you can use the "Insert image " icon to add the image to your post.

I use a digital camera and down load pic's into Picasa. I can send them anywhere just fine as a email, other then the Forum?

Now that I have the stud threaded and back installed on the plate, and the brushes back on the armature, how do i re-attached the copper wires back on the end of the stud.

Tried to download pic's from Picasa in my PC, no dice? It said they were to large to process?
