MGA Starter question MGA/MGB

OK- I have an "A",a "B"('64) and a Sprite. The "A" takes a Sprite (little) starter but the "B" takes some big monster starter. Both the A & B are bigblock cars and it looks like the little starter would fit in either. Does this mean that guys with built-up Spridgets could just put a "B" starter in to have more starting power (if it would fit)? Would the little starter start the B 1800 (maybe with great difficulty?)
Bill

I can't say on stock type starter, but I can tell you this, on the gear reduction starters the early 3 syncro tranny MGBs and all Spridgets are the same part number.

And I thought the A and early B series both used what Bill describes as the "big monster" one, compared to the Sprigets.

The Spridget & the MGA starters are the same (Moss #140-400)......though the early MGB starters (#140-465) are closer to them in size than the later 'monster' MGB starters (131-215).....but MGA & early MGB starters aren't interchangeable.

So will a Spridget starter work in a '63 B?

But they will swap if you're talking about gear reduction starters, to confuse matters even more /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Just think, if they kept the crank hole, we wouldn't have to worry about all that high tech stuff!

They probably ran out of crank handles.

And thanks (I think!) for those answers!
Bill

Since the MGA is a "B" block engine does it turn over REALLY slowly with the little starter? The last "A" I had was 30 years ago and I don't remember.
