Recently have been running into the problem that when I turn the key I get no response out of the starter. I replaced the starter relay (76B) and still no response. Tap the starter with the soft end of a hammer and it turns over for me. This is sporadic but becoming more and more common. Do I have a starter going bad?
 
Have you checked all your connections to include the ground?

If the electrical connections are clean and secure then it is possible that the bushings in the starter are worn and causing the starter to bind. If worn bushings are the problem, then replacing the starter is usually the best choice.
 
If tapping the starter makes it work then it is probably the brushes sticking or worn right down and tapping gives them the extra nudge to make contact.
 
Starters can be rebuilt by any competent automotive electrical shop. I use British Auto Electric in Anaheim, CA. Jerry Felper is a wiz with this stuff and is a multiple MG owner. Highly recommended.
 
Yup. If it spins up with impact applied, brushes are to blame. Shipping from Berwick to Anaheim and back may exceed its worth, tho. Any competent electric motor shop can put it right.
