I have notice that when I start my TR6 that the starter sounds sluggish, as if the battery is not fully charged,( new battery and always on a maintenance charger) once the starter spins for maybe a few seconds it picks up to what I call and have been use to "normal speed and sound" is this a beginning symtom of my starter beginning to Fail????? I am planning on unhooking the battery cable at the starter and clean this weekend
 
First thing I'd think about is to be sure the cables (at the battery posts and on the starter) are clean and tight.

Did the "sluggish sound" start just in the last few days? Just after you put in the new battery? Or has it been slowly getting more "sluggish sounding" over several months?

Good mechanical connections are not the same as good electrical connections. You are on the right path, disassemble and clean all cables and connections, thoroughly clean the points of contact and reassemble, then try it out.

If it still persists, as I think it may, I would have the starter checked by a professional electrical rebuilder if you are not comfortable with it. The brushes are probably wearing down and the commutator probably has a build-up on it that needs removed. Those two items, along with worn bushings in the end frame and rear plate can cause your symptoms.

No shame in any of this after 31 years of service.
 
the battery was installed last fall, and the symtom started about 3 starts ago which in Triumph time is about 6 weeks, how difficult is getting the starter out???
 
If all the above doesn't work, then it could also be the bushings in the starter. When they start to oval, the whole shebang gets off center slightly and gets sluggish even when all the electrical connections are spot on. The fix is plenty easy once the starter is on the workbench. There are two bushings. They are very inexpensive and easy to replace with the right tool. That being a Pilot Bearing/Bushing Puller. Which itself is not all that expensive to buy or rent.

The starter is pretty easy to pull out after the right preparation. Which can include removing the carbs. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
 
Since this about starters:

Maybe one out every ten start attempts I get a
loud, high pitched, shreeking sound when I turn
the key.. Never more than 2 shreeks in a row.

What causes this?

It sounds like your starter's drive unit or "bendix spring" is starting to weaken and that will cause the screaming noise. Naturally, follow all of the advise above for each of those items while you have it out.

For everyone involved:

FIRST STEP IN REMOVING STARTER -- DISCONNECT BATTERY CABLES FROM BATTERY !!!!

No, I'm not being silly, just reminding everyone of what is sometimes taken for granted.
