Got the starter connected correctly and amazing how it now works. Moment of truth: I turn the key and it cranks momentarily. I check to make sure everything looks good. Turn the key again and it cranks for a second then CRACK. (Yes from CLICK from a dead starter to CRACK as the...)

Rearmost rocker arm breaks in half.

I was having trouble with installing the pushrod -- it wouldn't sit right. Finally it settled in, but evidently not enough.

So I guess it's another order from Vicky Brit, as I'm in need of a new rocker arm...probably a new pushrod too. (Might as well get two in case another is wobbly.)

Gotta love working on old cars.

More important, why did it break? Do you think the pushrod wasn't in down in the lifter, thus pushing the valve into the piston? Were the clearances adjusted?

I agree with Darrell, figure out why it broke, you certainly don't want to do it again. From what you say you might not have had it seated right, which is possible, but although a little hard to describe, it isn't too hard to tell when the little ball is seated in the lifter and the cupped end mated with the rocker. I think a problem in that area would be pretty apparent when you adjusted the valves. Other possible causes, stuck valve? high lift cam and binding valve springs?

The answer is "I don't know". The head just came back from the machine shop with a clean bill of health.

I stupidly didn't adjust the valves thinking that I could just take off the rocker shaft, remove the head, get the stuck spark plug removed, put everything back on and fire it up. The interesting thing is that the machine shop didn't mill the head, but it has the symptom others have had of that last pushrod acting too high like the head was milled. It all fit perfectly prior to removal, though.
