TR2/3/3A Starter brushes for TR-A

I bought on line set starter motor brushes for my 1959 Triumph TR-A. When I receive them, they looked a different color
than what the picture shown. These brushes are either brass or copper in color not black as pictured.
Shouldn't these brushes be made of a softer material.
Does anyone know what they should be made of?
 
Starter brushes are sometimes brass colored. They are harder material than carbon ones used in generators. Bet you have the right ones, post us a picture if you still doubt them.

Yeah, old Lucas starters used copper, at least on the TR3 & 4 starters I've seen. I have some NOS brushes that definitely are some sort of copper. The TR6 starter uses a dark grey graphite-looking one though.

+ to the copper tint. All the ones I've installed are like that when they go in. They will be black when they come out...
 
Thanks for all your replies on my thread on TR-3A starter motor brushes.
I agree that they my just be mixture of carbon and a copper compound.
Other than color, every thing is right. Thanks all.
