I suspect the coolant at the rear oblong port in the block, is not circulating... with the head off it is still full of coolant. I stuck a welding rod in it and twisted and poked, lots a gunk, wich I think is normal, but any recomandations on clearing that port?(I'm thinking small bottle brush on a drill...?)

I would suggest you remove the rear drain cock from the engine block. If the starter motor is below the drain cock, cover it with a plastic bag or something for protection against coolant. I think your welding rod is probably a good tool to loosen the gunk and sediment at the rear of the engine. You may need to poke through the drain cock hole to allow the stuff to flow out. Sticking the rod through the various ports in the top of the block and working the rod around should loosen most to the crud in the block so you can flush it out.

Sometimes the stuff is pretty packed in there; I spent a long time on the Stag, starting with a drill bit and ending with a length of heavy steel wire with a crude cutting tip beat into the end.
To really clean it out good, you need to pull the liners. But for now, just clearing the port should be good enough.
