I know that Clarke Spares and Restorations does a good job on stamping engine plates. Do they stamp VIN plates and Smiths heater plates as well? If not, who does?

I looked on their web site, They no longer mention doing VIN plates. Stamping VIN numbers is a questionable legal issue.

With a registration, a Heritage certificate, the old VIN plate and a new blank I can't imagine a legal issue.
The more I think about it I don't like the engraving idea. These need to be stamped.
I'll give Clarke a call Monday.

The VIN plates and the heater tag are engraved. I purchased my BE with a bill of sale with a VIN # on it. I then had the blank Moss tag engraved by the trophy shop. Now registered with the good old state of CA. Good to go. At one point I had a personalized license plate with a current registration with a empty tub with no wheels, interior or engine.
Are the tags mounted on the door jambs engraved or stamped? I need to make one up once I find out my body number from the Heritage Certificate.

This may be a terminology issue.
The VIN and heater plates were indented one letter/number at a time with a chisel having the particular letter/number on the tip. The plate on the drivers A post was done the same way. The engine number plate and the plate on the passenger A post were stamped from the back side so that the numbers/letters protrude from the plate.

Scott, that looks nice. I don't see why DMV or anyone other that a concourse judge would have problem with it.
When I think throphy engraving, I think fancy smancey font. That's not bad at all.

No one has a prob with that. For instance they know nothing about how it should or should not be.
Modern VIN numbers are 17 didgets long. Count ours. Ours do not fit in the states computer systems. HEHE.
Many places to buy number punchs including Harbor Freight. My old grand dads tool box even has a set if I remember correctly. Surely the numbers can be purchased individualy some place if necessary.
In fact I bet you could have one made that would do the whole thing with one blow.

I always said Horrible fright has good stuff just as long as it has no moving parts and you don't plug it in.
So my magnetic tray and letter stamp kit still work.
Don't ask about the magnet with telescoping arm (moving part) which was used once and is still stuck inside the door of my old BMW.

Sounds like you have allot of disposible income. You don't need a letter stamp kit. All you need to do is peel the stamp off the backing paper and place it on the envelope.

Not so fast guys....If the tags are to be stamped from the back as Ray says, then good old HF doesn't have the RIGHT STUFF. Need to have stamps which are the mirror image to correctly stamp on the back! Just like the time my boss told me to letter the back of a sepia drawing so it would show up OK on the front...Have you ever tried to letter right to left in mirror image?
