Does anyone have information regarding the efficacy of German timing chains over the original British ones. This from a '71 stag lover that cost 8k at the time for an engine rebuild.

There were no "British original ones". Timing Chains for the Stag came from Renold in France.
Factory specification Original Equipment timing chains were manufactured to ISO specifications by Renold, a French company manufacturing the original roller chain design Since 1880 from a design conceptualized by Leonardo da Vinci, and the bush style chain was patented by Hans Renold. Renold also manufactured the original tensioners for the Stag OHC V8 factory engine.
There are many "aftermarket" parts for everything on the Stag, but quality differs significantly depending on where it was manufactured. So "the British ones" can now come from just about anywhere.
Rolon is another popular manufacturer of roller chains and tensioners, but quality varies significantly by country of manufacture, so always look for the ISO or ANSI specification and the country of manufacture
TRW was one of the largest roller chain quality manufacturers for automotive mass producing roller chains of all global specifications in US factories for many years. One high quality manufacturer of roller chains is Diamond chain owned by the quality brand Timkin. Diamond performs many documented ISA9001 quality steps in their manufacture for extreme longevity of their product so the chain does not wear the material on timing chain guides and the chain handles additional lateral stresses of misalignment. "German" roller chains are typically labeled with the ISO specification and branded IWIS who manufactured chains for Daimler Mercedes Benz. The quality was supposedly "better" because they were supposedly "pre stretched", which is bollocks as any reputable roller chain manufacturer holding an ISO certification runs the roller chain though a mechanical operation that some call "pre stretching", but is actually part of the ISO manufacturing specification.
