Squirrels & Pecans

Great Pumpkin - R.I.P

Every day I compete with the squirrels for my pecans - I'm up to harvesting about 4 dozen pecans a day right now...as I'm under the trees picking up pecans, the squirrels are up in the trees picking them before they fall.

Then they run along a limb, jump to my wooden fence, run along it, jump to the ground & head to their nest out in the big trees in my neighbor's yard....its funny to watch even though that's 1 less pecan for me...& the little suckers are constantly working in pairs, back & forth across the top of the fence.

& I'm also finding the remnants of their little lunches: pecans half eaten, empty pecan shells.

& the trees are still loaded with nuts that aren't yet ready to fall.

Looks like winter's almost here!

Sounds like typical tactics of the Squirrel's Union! :jester: (just kidding!)

This Summer, a squirrel was sneaking in through a tear in one of my window screens and stealing fruit off my kitchen counter. I didn't realize it until I caught him one day.

But squirrels aren't the only critters we see preparing for cold weather. Across the street from me is a wooded area where there are a lot of acorns dropping from the trees. Our local black bears come to this area this time of year to gorge themselves and fatten up before Winter. They're sort of neat but we always turn the light on before going out at night so we don't surprise them.

Oh to have a pecan tree!

Totally my favorite nut when I lived in Texas.

Raw, toasted, sugared, honey-roasted, ambrosia salad, pie, ice cream, waffles ...

drooling with envy here - let the squirrels be darned!

We have neither squirrels nor Pecan trees in PR.

Tony- Go find a friend with a Wrangler. Purchase
a 30 foot, nylon or hemp, tow rope.

Wrap the rope around the tree as high as you can
safely put it. Other end attach to the Wrangler.

A few gentle tugs by the Wrangler, will bring down
many ripe Pecans before the squirrels get 'em.

PEEcan pie?? my oh my!! Mouthwatering delight.

That reminds me of the Green Acres episode where Eva uses the convertible to pick oranges. With the top down, she'd back into the trunks at full speed. Dropping loads of oranges into the back seat.

My minds' eye image is sooo vivid I'm laughin' too hard to post aught but this!!!

I keep thinkin' of The Autoist in a "Beat the Clock" scenerio against an army of co-ordinated squirrels... their battle plan: outflank that ol' guy and do it with "two flight" tactics!!!

...my gut aches now....

Why do I have the image of "The General" from "Soap" in my head?

I was thinking back along the lines of Sgt Bilko
who ran the motor pool.

True story - we got married outside in a park in Orlando, Florida. At the ceremony, my bride-to-be and I noticed that the guests were standing at parts when they didn't need to. We learned later that there were squirrels up in the trees throwing acorns, nuts, etc. down on the guests!!!
