Squeel when clutch pedal is depressed

More than likely, the T/O bearing. Less of a chance that the pilot bushing is coming loose, but if you do the clutch, check it closely.

Either you enjoy shifting too much or you need a new pair of shoes. (Sorry... couldn't resist).

I second the throw out bearing but it could also be a pilot bearing in the flywheel (less likely).

The Crypt Car had that problem during it's short
life on the road. The clutch also felt "sticky"
upon release of the pedal.

Every mechanic I asked, said the same thing-- T/O bearing.
So as soon as the Crypt Car is running agin, I will run it
over to have the entire clutch assembly replaced.

And you will replace the pilot bushing as well at that time?

I replaced the pilot bearing in my car only because I had it all apart and considered it cheap insurance. I only suggest it as another possible (but again... less likely) source.

Hey Paul,

I have found the cost of labor to take something apart
greatly exceeds the costs of parts. Like $400 to replace
a leaking $5. oil seal. When I have something apart,
I usually refurbish or replace everything inside.

I have an estimate of around $1,200 to $1,500 labor only
for the clutch replacement. I will change out every part
having to do with the clutching function.

thanks,

d

BTW, if the car has been sitting up, unused, for a while then you may find the squeel will go away after some use. Keep your fingers crossed.

Well that's odd - my clutch usually just sits quietly in the corner not speaking when its depressed. A few kind words, or a change in the weather will often cheer it up though.

I thought maybe it was a low hydraulic fluid level, could this be the problem? The car shifts and runs great. It only makes the sound right after start up and goes away after the pedal is pressed in a couple times.

Tinster, you've got to shop that around. That is about 3 times too high for the job. The job shouldn't take longer than 6 hours, tops, for a good tech to do. Even giving him 7 hours, that's still close to $200 per hour!

Maybe you could help by removing the passenger seat and carpeting leaving the drivers seat and follow the pictures on my site to see how far down it goes. Remember, Erik stripped my interior completely when he did my job.

And while you're in there, pull the rear engine cover and replace the rear main seal and have the flywheel resurfaced at a machine shop. That should cost another $50-$80 max.
