Hi Michael,
Not entirely. I had a crack in the housing of my Weber 45 DCOE which obviously led to a fuel leak. However, upon replacing it with a brand new Weber (with exact same jet settings), I still am experiencing the same issue. In fact, it is arguably worse as I can't get the new carburetor to idle properly. I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps the Pertronix Flamethrower distributor is implicated somehow. The plugs are brand new as are the plug wires. I don't believe it is the coil because the issue is unrelated to whether the engine is warm or cold.

I highly doubt this is your problem but I had sporadic sputtering and occasional complete power loss under load earlier this year. After puttering around I figured out it was the fuel pressure regulator, of all things. It was holding back the flow significantly enough to starve the carb. I tore it apart for fun but didn't see what could be wrong with it but after putting a new one on all was well.

Interesting that you mention that because I installed a brand new Carter P4070 fuel pump which (as I've read) is supposed to be run in the absence of a fuel pressure regulator with the Webers. Bypassing the Holley fuel pressure regulator was a no-brainer and yet the problem persists.

Not sure if this could be your problem and a lot of other folks problem or not but I wonder if its the ethenol blended fuel. On a regulator that went bad I had the rubber parts were pretty hard as compared to a new unit.exposed to fuel for 1 year. Also I had a mech. fuel pump on a 948 that did the same thing.
Matrial incompatablity? or just plain poor quality?
 
Jeff Shclemmer at Advanced Distributor has some high quality rotors, shotty rotor has been a big problem lately.

Hi Chris,
I thought that the regulator may have been problematic as well but have bypassed it as a function of installing a new Carter P4070 fuel pump. These pumps are supposed to work very well with the Webers (and don't require a fuel pressure regulator). Nonetheless, this has <span style="font-weight: bold">not</span> reconciled the issue.

Hi Hap,
Agreed! I spoke with Jeff earlier in the week and he highlighted how problematic the 45D Pertronix units have been, especially the ones with the black caps. The more reliable units apparently have a blue cap. I placed an order and hope to have it by week's end.

As a follow up to this thread, my issue turned out to be a function of a cracked carburetor housing as well as a defective distributor.
