Sprite Sway Bar

Hello,
1966 Austin Healy Sprite Mk 3
The cold weather has finally left and it is time to work on my toy. The sway arm brackets on the frame were broke off and over the years somebody tried to weld bolts to the frame using sheet metal etc to keep the sway bar in place. Yesterday I ground the frame horns and removed all of the old metal. I am using metal flat stock (3/16 thickness) that is 3 inches wide and 8 inches long for the frame horn bottom plates. Could someone please measure the distance from the frame horn end to the bolt hole for the sway bar bracket. I need to drill holes in the plate before I have the plates welded on the horns. I guess I should have nuts welded onto the inside of the plate for the bolts. Could you also tell me the distance between the bracket holes (I have new brackets coming but not here yet. Also need the diameter of the bolts used to secure the sway bar brackets. The sway bar also has two bolt holes at each end looks like someone may have drilled extra holes to help with the alignment, is this normal or should there be only one hole at each end. The bar is 11/16 inches in diameter. Any comments on my fix or help would be appreciated
Thanks,
Phil Jarrett

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

They are about 15 1/4" left to right.

An extra hole in the swaybar does not seem right.

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Thank you for the pictures. The pictures are fantastic I have know excuses now. Your time is appreciated. With two young kids etc. my restoration project sits more then it moves forward. I did purchase full insurance and a plate for it so I can at least drive it around the block legally this summer. Would you be able to tell me the diameter of the bolts used in the brackets?
I have tried a couple of times to upload a picture but never seem to get it to work.
Thanks Phil

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Thanks.

My sig now has the Photobucket link I have been using for awhile now. There are several pages but I think these are on the 72 midget page.

I believe the bolts are 5/16-24. I've got a set if needed and any other Midget parts you may need. Drop me a PM or an email and I'll do what I can to help.

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Make that the 71 Midget tub page.

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Any Midget part, Hmmmmm.

How about a 948 head with the part number 12G 206 or 12G 295.

Yheee Hawwww. Don't even go look they are almost like hens teath.

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

You got me there Jack. Maybe "all" was a little over the top. I should have used "most"

I do have a '69 AH 1275 though /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Phil,
You can use the measurements, however, what about hooking up the two ends of the sway bar and marking the mounts when you put it into place?

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Thank you for all the replies, working to much this week so maybe this weekend I can upload a few pictures and fix the sway bar

That's the office which pays for my toys.

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Nice office, and a far better view than I get from my basement cubby! Who do you fly for?

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Good stuff, love pics.

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

I fly for Air Canada; the office is an airbus 320. I like the window view. Better then working for a living.

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Great pics thanks.

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Great pics!

So which is more reliable and the most expensive to repair, the A320 or the Sprite? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Getting paid to do what you enjoy is a wonderful thing, good on ya!

Re: Sprite Sway Bar

Jack, Strictly the 12G206 and 12G295 heads are for the 998cc or 1098cc engines. Before shelling out for those hen's teeth, check to be sure either of them will fit a 948cc engine.

I have a completely unused 2A629 head, which IS for the 948cc engine, which has never had any valve guides installed, and still has the original blue-green paint on it.
