Sprite "Ribcase" Transmission

I recently bought a 1967 Sprite that had been in storage for about 20 years. Don’t know why it was taken off the road.

The 1098 engine runs pretty well, but there is a problem with the transmission. It will shift into 1st, 2nd, and reverse normally. However, when trying to engage 3rd or 4th there is no movement of the selector rod.

My question is, what can be done to investigate and possibly fix this issue without removing the engine and transmission?
