Sprite heater/fan air duct question

I need help finding a suitable air duct piece to connect the heater fan to the heater box on my 1959 Sprite. Moss sells a piece (part number 363-390), but it's too short! The piece they sell is 4" long. I need one about 6" long. I asked them about buying a piece cut a little longer, but apparently they get the stuff pre-cut(?).

Based on many of the Sprite heaters I've seen, mine is missing a short metal extension on the air intake. The extension on mine is only about 1/4-1/2". It actually looks just like the illustration on the Moss website:

https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29374#top

I've attached a picture that shows the gap I'm dealing with. The ID of the 4" piece I bought from Moss is 3.25".

Does anyone know of a source for this material in longer lengths? I've checked all the potential local sources in my area, and nobody has anything in that size.

Thanks,

Well you might, just might go to the home supply store and get a peice in the diam. you wnat then cut and finish as your wish. Won't be perfect but..... or get the right peice for the blower off of ebay maybe. Be sure and use the right kind of paint.

I've checked a couple of heater boxes on eBay. They all look like mine!!!

I've attached another photo with what I believe to be the correct setup (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The piece I received from Moss doesn't actually look like either of the pieces in the picture. It's just a piece of lightweight corrugated black plastic pipe.

Yes, that is the piece that I have on mine it has door in to open and close the box.

Wow, you a have a fifty-niner like me cool, I agree with both of Jack's suggestions.

Oh, thats the flap door peice you are missing Kurt.

Just keep watching ebay for one of those. I saw one awile back.

Ha. since you can't get the heater switches you don't need that part anyway, Gesh.

When you pull the switch out it throws that flap inside that part.

The peice from Moss is goes from the end of the flap door peice to the output of the blower.

Okay... now I'm getting more confused (and not sure exactly what I have). My blower motor actually has a butterfly type door on the front (intake) of it. It's removed in the picture.

I really just want to connect the two pieces, but cant find any freakn' 3.25" duct!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

I have seen some early units (pre 70 something)with the door there also. I would try home depot or an auto parts store. Either explaining that it is for a vent (ex dryer) or for the latter a defrost duct. Maybe JC Whitney or another place will sell defrost ducts in different diameters.

I have bought them in the past, but please be cautioned that they were made of plastic and not cloth.

Thanks... I'd found that website with a Google search. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have anything with a 3.25" ID. I can't seem to find any source online (or locally) for plastic flex hose with a 3.25 ID. I wish I new where Moss got the stuff, but they aren't telling... arrggghhh!

This is for a Bugeye??

Door on front of blower is wrong

Is heater box, short peice of tube wirh door in it attached to heater box with three screws, tube, then blower unit with motor. From heater blower to front of car is a hose long one the size of a household clothes dryer hose.

Pic in Moss catalog does not show on page 16 the flapper unit but it goes between there item 1 and 4.

Flapper units can be seen on the other heaters on page 16 and 17 as attached to the heater box, they look the same to me.

This is not a Bugeye

Kurtis... Any high school metal shop (or aluminum siding/gutter installer) can easily make the piece you need with a bending brake. Cut a piece of flat metal stock... aluminum gutter stock is available pre-finished in glossy black. width = the length you need. length = the circumference you need plus 1/2". Use the brake to fold 1/4" of the length back on itself at each end. Roll the piece up and interlock the ends...
Now you have your part in any length or diameter you need! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
