sprite brakes

Our '65 Sprite has drum brakes on the front where it should have discs. Any ideas as to why, anyone? Maybe leftover parts that the company wanted to be rid of? Owby.
 
Is this a MK2 Sprite (side screens and flat dash)? It's possible that it is really an earlier car, with a later title date. These cars were titled in the year they were sold, not the year they were made. It's not unheard of for the title year to be a fair bit later.

Otherwise, maybe someone cannibalized the discs for another car and replaced them with the earlier drums to keep the car rolling.
 
It's a '65 Mk 3 according to the chassis plate. Probably right about the scavenge job--doesn't seem to have been wrecked. Also, does anyone know what the #'s 12 G and 169 mean on the block casting? Thanx, Owby.
 
If the engine number starts 12G it's probably a 1275cc unit: the Mk III engines were 1098cc, and the engine number started 10CC (I think). So the PO put a bigger engine in, and weaker brakes on...
