spring in the transmission

Lookin to buy a 62 Bt7.
The seller tells me that spring in the transmission that is compressed when the shift lever is moved all the way to the Left to go into Reverse.

This feature works good when the Transmission is cold, but when the Transmission warms up, the spring does not activate. He said I should just live with it, as it is a massive job to remove the Transmission and "hopefully" fix it. Therefore, when you are driving the car, and shifting into second gear, you must remember to not move the lever too far to the Left. Just move it straight down from the 1st gear position.

What do you think? Is this a big job? How much would you estimate this to be fixed?

I think there's a 50/50 chance you can "fix it" without removing the transmission from the car. If it's the side-shift model, the fork to engage reverse is exposed when the cover's off, so you might be able to access it to replace the spring and possible dress the plunger to remove any burrs or high spots.

AH67,
Check out this thread I posted:
Transmission Removal/Replacement #784345 - 07/21/11 03:06 PM

Removing the transmission is a big job, but not massive and is fairly straightforward. I'd estimate about 5 hours to remove and 5 hours to replace. You could reduce the time to about 3 hours if you had a helper.

If you can get the side cover off, you could fix the spring and pin for next to nothing. Just remove the cotter pin and withdraw the pin and spring and check for problems. Order new parts. The pin must be sticking when depressed. Could be a weak spring or a corroded pin.

Here is a pic of the trans in place with tunnel off showing the room you have to remove the side cover. You'd need a new gasket.
