Spridget Steering Wheel

Would a steering wheel from a '68 fit a bugeye rack? Looking at the moss catalog, it appears they used the same non collaspsible rack up until the early 70's. But what I can't tell is if they changed the splines.

Is the part number the same?

Moss doesn't have a part number for the early rack (unless I just missed it) and all the steering wheels DO have different part numbers as the styles changed, but that doesn't mean the spline sizes aren't the same.

No not part number for the rack, part number for the stearing shaft. Same part number same splines.

Unfortunately, I can't find any parts numbers anywhere to confirm. But I did find this in Terry Horler's Original Sprite and Midget under steering. (p.83) "The only changes for HAN8 and GAN3 modles concerned the steering column and wheel. A new column was provided with a revised upper portion to suit the new steering wheel and a self-cancelling indicator control stalk"

I always loved the look of the Banjo steering wheels and would like one in my bugeye. Hopefully, the splines are the same as Donn suggested.

So you are talking about keeping the Bugeye steering column and just putting a '68 wheel on it?

Yes

My BE has a crappy rusted aftermarket piece of junk on it now and the original wheels don't do that much for me.

John:

Is the banjo wheel the one that has the three spokes that are made out of wire and a really cool hub with the logo on it?

If you have a picture that would be great, because I think that it is the same wheel that my brother has on his BE, but do not remember what year it is from.

Brother, brother with a BE, now really. Next you will tell us it is old english white and he has a PB as well. LOL

Pat,

I have a bid on this one on evilbay. I put in the bid before I read the bit in Horler's book. The guy says he also has a AH center too. I LOVE the banjo wheels. I sure hope it fits the BE splines.

and I never told you about my other brother.

The Bugeye spline is smaller that a '68. The MKI and II Sprite and MKI Midgets were all the same spline, then they changed to a larger size until the end of production.

drat!!!

You shouldn't need a rack, just the column. The problem would be making it look right after removing the turn signal stalk and wiper switch. I don't have a late column to compare the BE to.

John:

I called my brother and he said that it did fit. He said that he didn't change the steering shaft. That was over 20 years ago, so unless he is having a senior moment, it should work.

Can you ask the seller the diameter and check it? Because we did have a '68 parts car that he had gotten it from.

Pat

P.S. It looks great on his car.

Chris,

Thanks for the help. I was just looking at the Horler book again for reference. Looks like sometime in 67-68 they changed the column to the collaspable type, so I'm not sure it would work. Unless teh earlier non- collaspable MiV/III column would fit that wheel!?!

Thanks Pat, I'll ask the seller. Good idea.

There are 3 different columns and 4 different steering wheel splines throughout the years.
Bugeye & MKII are the same, 5/8 shaft. 65-67 had a longer column with 3/4" shaft. 68-7? went to a collapsible column and back to 5/8 fine splines. Somewhere in the 70s they went to a 5/8 coarse spline.
No a 67 shaft will not fit a bugeye, I tried because a had a cool Formula wood wheel but only the hub for a 67.
I had to have a hub machined to fit the bugeye.
