i have a set of 20 year old 3 ways in a plastic box, and a nice jvc single cd player. The speakers float behind the seats, usually held in place by a jacket or a bag. Thing is these speakers might just attatch to the floor under my knees in front of the seat. Any one tried that kinda set up yet?

Here is mine--I had someone make it so I wasn't individually as creative as some have been, and it ended up costing some coin...so may not appeal to all.

That setup is flippin' nice man. It looks like it cost a little jack but it also looks very professional. Inspirational images regarding the interior buildup.

What I have in mind is leaving the radio console empty on the front except for the 4 way flasher switch and light and cigar lighter and then enclose the back of the console and put speakers on each side and then the back vent for the speakers will come out the original speaker grill.

That was my original thought (2 speakers in the cabinet) but I wasn't sure if I could get full range speakers small enough. do you know off hand what size the speakers are or the product number?

"My Midget still has the original radio for looks, with a Kenwood CD player sitting in the glovebox. I'll leave the glovebox open and control it with the remote while I'm driving. I have 2 tweeters behind the original speaker grille, and 2 6x9s behind me. Ths year I plan on adding an iPod interface underneath the ashtray so that I can remove the insert and hook up my nano. The PO was the one responsible for this. To tell you the truth, I don't know if I would have had the cajones to "cut up" a 46k original mile car in this condition. I'm glad he did, though - it sounds excellent!
 
getting a high dollar head unit off ebay for cheap AND
using a brand name (kicker, fosgate) component set makes a HUGE difference!
if u just wanna have some noise going, head on down to wal mart and blow ur money on a watered down kenwood model...
but if u wanna HEAR the music, dont sacrifice ur quality!
if a unit has at least a 5 band EQ built in and MORE than 200 watts, its probably a good model..usually will cost less than $175 on ebay! ;).. i cant say enough about component sets!...they come with crossovers!
between the crossovers and the EQ, u have TOTAL control of ur power and sound! and u can hear parts of songs u never knew existed before with a HQ setup ..nuff said...zimmmy
 
I bought good brand new speakers, but for the radio I picked out a good name brand unit that had a huge discount because it had been a demo unit. I ended up getting a nice looking Alpine unit that can also play MP3 cds.
 
I bought cheap speakers/stereo because I basically want something(noise) to listen to when stuck in traffic. Once I'm driving I prefer to listen to the voices in my head. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
 
Ignore the bar, but this is what the PO installed and they actually make some sense to me....
They are raised, so they don't protrude into the trunk, however, aren't raised enough that it gets in the way of the hood (when I had one) when it was down.
They don't produce much volume, just enough to hear what you're listening to, but then 1275s play sweet enough music.

only spent $200 on $600 worth of stereo....
only on ....ebay!......z

in my offense, i use my car to test new recordings from my home studio.....you GOTTA have a good system if u record music...z
 
I never planned on putting a stereo in my Midget, but like I said... redlights and traffic jams get boring.

I think in my Bugeye I'll just use the iPod and ear buds for stop and go traffic.
 
Good old speakers from Radio Shack. I used to sell that exact speaker when I worked for them 35 years ago. Bet those paper cones are in great shape.

Yeah seeing those speakers brought back memories of working retail 50-60 hours per week. First management job out of college. Me a dumb kid who knew nothing. Good training however for the next 25-30 years spent in sales / customer service roles.
 
Like I stated earlier I bought a set of new 3 way Pyramid 3808 speakers (already mounted in nice enclosures) and a new Audiovox AV-970 AM/FM/Cassette radio for my 76 Midget. I bought both of them on Ebay for around $25.00 each. I mounted the speaker enclosures behind each seat with the speakers pointing to the rear of the car. They are small and fit very well. That way the speakers are not covered up by the convertible top when it is down. The radio looks vintage 1970s with regular knobs but it has a digital readout and doesn't drift off of the radio stations. While this isn't an audiophile stereo system it works very well in a car that I occasionally drive.
