But how cool is it that C47, DC3 cargo aircraft, many years after they should have been parked, earned the title of AC 47??? Their little Douglas hearts must have been swelled with pride. I build a lot of models of piston engine aircraft, and building one of these is on my short list.
 
I admit the Gooney is an amazingly long-lived airframe. Just not the better gunboat, IMO.
 
True, but they had to start someplace. In order to "prove" the concept, attach the hardware to a proven platform....Sure made an impression on ol Victor Charlie I hear.
 
Amazing testimonial for an aircraft that was first built in 1933 as the DC-1, which they only built one, TWA got it, then in 1934, the DC-2 came out and then the famous DC-3, which quite a few are still flying in various countries. Philco radio corp had one as an executive taxi, back in the late 60s. We maintained it. I flew right seat in it a couple times. It is one of the most gentle handling aircraft I've ever flown, very easy on the controls, considering they were totally manual, no power assist!. Here's a photo of a modern turbo conversion with twice the horse power. STOL? Very possible. PJ

Just found out this ones airworthiness certificate expired April, 2009. Belonged to the aircraft test pilot school in AZ. Hope it's resurrected.
 
Big celebration going on for the DC-3s 75 year existence. Big article in the AOPA magazine this month showing two aircraft exploding fire works high up. Pretty neat. PJ

What a shame, didn't know that. Probably be taken apart for usable parts, as they don't make structural parts for them any more. The turbines are worth more each than the whole aircraft. When I closed up my aircraft parts business in the early 70s, I sold all my DC-3 parts to a firm in South America and all the propeller stuff to a firm in California. I know a little about the DC-3/C-47s. :jester:
