I've taken a deposit on the TR6,but would still like to have a convertible,
so I'm thing about what I might buy.
What way should I go?

As always, depends. I love my Spridget, but, it is a 50 mile car. If you want to do any touring at all, from that list I would choose the TR7. (Or better a TR8) They seem to be coming into their own style and respect wise and every review I have ever read says they are capable tourers. That said if you will be doing servicing, I suspect the Spit or the Spridget will be simpler.

In my experience, my cars have always found me.
 
The tr7 is the most comfortable driver without a doubt. I still want a tr6 though. As far as servicing the 7, So far it is not as bad as I thought it would be.(but I have not had to pull the head off yet!) If you can find a well sorted tr8, you will be happy.
I have my 7s just because they are so darn cheap!
 
IMO you're downgrading either way just in a different level. If the 6 was "too much" (of whatever I don't know) then I would look at something more modern. I hate to say it and you won't like it but Miata.
 
Later Spitfire (MkIII, or IV with an O/D would be my choice of spittys), a TR8, or and I may be looking in the wrong direction but maybe a TR 4 or 250.

Don't know your situation but a nice, nimble, and excellent performer is a Lotus Elise. Modern Toyota power train, some wicked handling, and a fun car to tool down the country lanes in. Excellent low mileage 05's and 06's can be foun at a good price. We've had ours since new, (2005), with no major problems and still have smiles on our faces after a drive.
Just a thought.
