Spitfire Spitfire oil pan gasket question.

About to start on replacing my leaky oil pan gasket. Looks like a PITA to do. My question is, should I just use a new gasket, or should I also use some type permatex ? I really want to get this right the first time.

New gasket. Hylomar Blue sealer(Harbor Freight has it). If it's leaking from the front you'll want to make sure the aluminum sealing block doesn't have stripped threads. Here is a little info on it spitfire oil pan removal While you've got it off it's a good time to check the thrust washers.

:iagree: Also check the flange on the pan while it's off, to be sure it's flat. Overtightening distorts the flange so it will never seal. If it's not torn, it can be straightened with hammer & dolly.

Does the hylomar blue go on each side of the gasket like a sandwich or only on the block or the pan side?

They did not have it at Harbor Frieght by me, but they do on ebay.

I vote for pan side only, unless you really, REALLY like struggling the next time you need to drop the pan!
Haven't tried it on a Spit, but I use it on both sides of the pan gaskets for my engines, and they still come off easily. In fact, that is one of the things I like about Hylomar, it never sets up hard the way things like Permatex #3 do.
