I've had my 78 Spitfire on the road now for about 4 years now. Sat in storage for about 17 years. It has @90k on it now. Ever since I got it running it has made a whining noise when it is under power. Checked the diff oil and it was full and clean. Removed fiance from car. All the driveshafts feel free and smooth when rotated by hand. Anybody have any idea as to the source of this? Thanks in advance!

Try it with the belts off. Eliminate the air, water pumps and alternator. No comment on the fiance.

Sorry should have mentioned. Whine is from the rear of the car.

at 90k, the diff gears are noisy. if the oil stays clean don't worry about it. It is louder than the fiance?

Most Spitfires make noise of some sort.

Thanks guys! Here in western pa there are a lot of twisty and winding roads so on main roads the noise is louder... on twisty ones she is!

Have you ever changed the rear wheel bearings? Ever lube them? If you can get the hub off, it's not too hard or expensive to replace them, but the hubs can be a PITA.

Sound seems to be fairly consistant. Had it out Friday on some twists and direction of thrust doesn't seem to affect the sound. Hub bearings were missed at the first two or three services because the nipples were covered in undercoat but have been checked every time since then. Weatherman is calling for 65 tomorrow so I will listen further.

Makes noise under power doesn't matter if I'm turning.
