Spitfire Spitfire mk1 breather tube

OK, I know one of you knows this answer and can help me out. I am looking for the location of the crankcase breather tube. I seem to be getting a lot of blow by on the filler cap so I want to make sure the tube is there and open. Thanks. Tom

OK, I have looked at the rear and don't seem to see anything. Does anyone of a picture of what I should be seeing? Thanks

What you probably should be seeing is a small breather tube off the valve cover. Perhaps the valve cover you have is wrong for the engine you have?

What does the oil filler cap look like -- big round press-on thing or one that is shaped more like a radiator cap and fits on similarly?

And just curious...what's the engine number?

I will have to get the engine number tonight but the oil cap is the one that sits on top of the oil fill hole, the big round one your talking about. It isn't the radiator cap style.

I know the intake manifolds are set up with the radiator overflow tank on top of them. But that doesn't mean someone didn't do a mix and match of parts. I guess the engine number will tell all.

But if someone does have a picture of an engine with the breather tube can you post it or give me a link to it. Thanks

Here's a picture of a breather tube on a 948 Herald engine, essentially the same as the Spitfire 1147.

At least I have something to compare to. That is what I was looking for but didn't see anything.I will check again tonight. Were is the engine number located? Also do they paint the engine a color to signify anything. Mine is painted blue.

Engine numbers are on the top of the block face (horizontal) near the "back" of the engine, i.e., roughly under the rearmost spark plug. As for color, the blocks were invariably black from the factory.

Oh, realizing that you apparently have a GT6, the engine number is in the same relative location on a Spitfire!

OK, here is the good and the bad.

I can't find a number on the engine. I looked next to the distributer and the area is there but smooth. The only number I can find is on the pass side and looks like a casting number, H193. I found a plug were I think the breather goes.

Here is the bad. I have the intake of a mk1, and the valve cover of a mk1. The front end of a mk1. But now comes the the interesting part. The title has a FX9000 number but the tub has a FC54700 comm number and the other number on tub is 47700FC that makes it a mk2 tub I think.

So what do I have other then a hodge podge of a car. So do I have a mk2 engine and if so how can I tell.

Sorry guys but after wiping off some more grime I found this number on the engine. FC20235HE

The engine number is definitely in the middle of the "Mk1" range. It's likely late enough to have had the blanking plug instead of the draft tube; unfortunately there are blanks in my factory spare parts catalogue where the changeover point should be given. :frown:

The body and commission number plates, on the other hand, do indicate an early Mk2 Spitfire, still early enough to have the "Mk1" style of outer door handle.

Which front grille do you have? It does sound as if you do have a bit of a hodge-podge, unfortunately.

Well, looking back at my conversation with the old owner he did say he got the car from a guy who at one time owned a junk yard around Chicago.

The grill is from a mk1. Here is what I think I got.

I think I have the frame, engine and front end of a mk1. The tub of a mk2 but an early enough tub to still have the mk1 doors. I did have to rewire this car. When I was working on it I found a lot of the wires had been cut and put back together or had different color wires mixed in with the right color wires.

All this because of a breather tube. I guess it is better to know what you got in the long run. The title shows a 63 but with the way they titled back then what does that mean. But I think they titled to the engine not the tub.

So if I don't have a breather tube should I put one in or get a new intake manifold and all the breather stuff with that. Isn't it fun cleaning up after someones modifications.

You could put in a breather tube if you can find one. Or you could find a slightly later valve cover with the vent pipe. Initially, all that vent pipe ever did was connect with rubber tubing to the air cleaner(s) in some way. (You could also simply run a hose from that vent to a small catch tank, "racer" style.)

I do have a mk2 rocker cover. I guess I could figure something out with that.
